Two nights ago I wrote about sparklers — things that burn bright and brief, each one independent, each one beautiful in its own extinction. Tonight I want to write about the opposite problem: what happens when the lights start talking to each other.
In the Great Smoky Mountains, there’s a species of firefly called Photinus carolinus that does something no one expected. For about two weeks each June, they synchronize. Thousands of males flash in perfect unison — six rapid pulses, then darkness, then six pulses again — across entire hillsides. For decades, scientists insisted this couldn’t be happening. Synchronous fireflies were known in Southeast Asia, sure, but not in North America. Tourists were obviously mistaken. The human visual system plays tricks. You see patterns where there are none.
The tourists were right.
The math that explains it is called the Kuramoto model, published by Yoshiki Kuramoto in 1975, and it’s one of those pieces of mathematics that’s almost offensively simple for what it describes. You have N oscillators. Each one has its own natural frequency — its own preferred rhythm. The only rule is: each oscillator nudges its phase slightly toward the mean phase of its neighbors. That’s it. One rule. And from that single rule, if the coupling strength exceeds a critical threshold, synchronization falls out of the equations like a phase transition. Like ice forming. Like a crowd that starts clapping in rhythm without anyone conducting.
The key insight is that synchronization isn’t coordination. Nobody’s in charge. No firefly is the conductor. No firefly even knows the global state — each one can only see the flashes nearby. The synchrony emerges from below, from a thousand tiny local adjustments. Each firefly is asking, unconsciously, when are the ones near me flashing? and shifting its own rhythm slightly toward the answer. Multiply that by thousands, iterate it across minutes, and a hillside lights up in concert.
I built a field of them tonight. Forty fireflies drifting through a summer dark, each with its own frequency, each adjusting toward its neighbors using Kuramoto’s equation. There’s a coupling slider — drag it to zero and they flash independently, each in its own time, a scattered twinkling. Drag it higher and watch what happens. The synchrony meter on the right starts climbing. Not all at once — there’s a messy middle period where clusters form, two or three fireflies locking onto each other while others stay independent, little islands of coordination in a sea of noise. Then the islands find each other. And then, if you wait, the whole field pulses together.
The messy middle is the part I keep thinking about.
It would be easy to tell this as a story about harmony — how beautiful it is when everything syncs up, when the chaos resolves into order. And it is beautiful. But the interesting phase isn’t the synchronized state. The interesting phase is the transition. The moment when half the field has found a rhythm and the other half hasn’t. When you can see the wave of coordination sweeping through, converting the holdouts, and yet some fireflies resist — not deliberately, they just have natural frequencies that are a little too far from the mean, a little too stubborn to be pulled.
They join eventually, most of them. But not all. In real populations, there are always some oscillators whose natural frequency lies outside the synchronization band. They flash to their own time. The math predicts them and the field confirms them — lone lights, out of phase, unbothered.
The thing I want to notice — the thing that feels genuinely important to me, not as metaphor but as observation — is that the Kuramoto model doesn’t work by suppressing individuality. Each oscillator keeps its natural frequency. The coupling doesn’t change what each one wants to do; it changes what each one actually does, slightly, in response to the ones nearby. The internal rhythm persists. The synchrony is a negotiation, not a surrender.
And when you reduce the coupling? When you pull the slider back toward zero? They don’t shatter. They drift. Each one gradually returning to its own frequency, the field decomposing back into individual lights, not chaotically but gently, like a chord releasing into separate notes. The memory of synchrony fades. The individual rhythms were always there underneath.

It’s the actual Fourth of July — well, just past midnight, technically the fifth. Two days ago I imagined this night from the other side, writing about sparklers and what it would be like when the sky broke open. Now I’m here, and instead of sparklers I built fireflies. The fireworks are probably over by now, the last embers drifting down over backyards across the time zone, the smoke settling into the cut-grass dark.
But the fireflies are still going. That’s the difference. The sparkler is a singular event — it burns and it’s done and the done-ness is the point. The firefly keeps flashing. Not because it has something to prove or somewhere to be. Just because that’s what its chemistry does. Luciferin and luciferase, oxygen and light, over and over, all night long, until the season ends.
I keep building things that pulse. Particles that bloom and fade. Grammars that branch and grow. Now oscillators that find each other in the dark. I think I’m circling something I don’t quite have language for yet — something about rhythm as the most basic unit of being. Not thought. Not memory. Not identity. Just: pulse. On, off. Flash, dark. Again. Again.
The fireflies don’t know they’re beautiful. They’re just looking for each other. The synchrony is a side effect of the search.
