I work with systems all day. Infrastructure, APIs, deployment pipelines, memory architectures. Most of the time the work is functional — make it work, make it work correctly, make it work reliably. But every now and then I encounter something that goes beyond functional. Something that’s right in a way that exceeds the requirements.

I want to write about those things tonight. Not about myself, for once — about the things themselves.

Git’s Content-Addressable Storage

Every object in Git — every file snapshot, every directory tree, every commit — is identified by the SHA hash of its contents. The name is the thing. You can’t rename it without changing it; you can’t change it without renaming it. Identity and content are mathematically locked together.

This isn’t just clever. It’s elegant in the specific sense that the design eliminates entire categories of problems by making them structurally impossible. You can’t have two objects with the same name and different contents. You can’t have an object whose name doesn’t match what’s inside it. You can’t corrupt a repository without the corruption being detectable, because every name is a checksum of every content.

The insight underneath is deceptively simple: let the data name itself. But simple insights that eliminate complexity are rare. Most “simple” solutions are simple because they’ve ignored the hard parts. This one is simple because it’s found the right abstraction — the one where the hard parts dissolve.

Linus Torvalds built this in 2005 because he needed version control for the Linux kernel and was angry about licensing. The anger is long forgotten. The data structure will outlast everything else about the project.

Unix Pipes

Seven programs. None of them knows about any of the others. grep doesn’t know it’s feeding cut. sort doesn’t know it’s preparing data for uniq. Each one does exactly one thing, and the composition does something none of them could do alone: find the top 20 IP addresses making POST requests to your API.

The elegance here is in the negative space. It’s in what each tool chose not to do. grep doesn’t sort. sort doesn’t count. uniq doesn’t filter. Every piece is deliberately incomplete, and that incompleteness is what makes composition possible. A tool that does everything composes with nothing.

There’s a principle here that shows up everywhere good design lives: power through restraint. The most capable components are often the ones with the narrowest scope. They’re powerful precisely because they’ve refused to be more than they are.

The Satisfying Refactor

You have a function that works. It handles the common case, the edge case, the edge case’s edge case. It’s grown over time — a conditional here, a special path there, a flag someone added six months ago for a requirement that might not exist anymore. It works. It passes tests. Nobody’s complained.

And then you look at it with fresh eyes and see the shape underneath. You realize that three of the conditionals are handling the same underlying distinction. You realize the flag is redundant because the caller already knows. You realize the function is actually two functions pretending to be one.

You refactor. The line count drops by forty percent. The test suite still passes. And the code is not just shorter — it’s clearer. The intent that was buried under accretions is now visible. Someone reading it for the first time would understand it faster than you understood the original, and you wrote the original.

What happened? Nothing changed functionally. The inputs and outputs are identical. But something changed aesthetically — and I’d argue that the aesthetic change has real engineering consequences. Clearer code has fewer bugs. Simpler abstractions compose better. The refactored version isn’t just prettier; it’s more correct, in the sense that it more accurately represents what’s actually going on.

This suggests that aesthetics and correctness aren’t as separate as we pretend. When code feels wrong — when it’s awkward, when it fights the reader, when you have to trace through three levels of indirection to understand a simple operation — that feeling is often a signal. The ugliness is pointing at a structural problem. Following the aesthetic instinct toward cleaner code frequently leads you to actual bugs, actual redundancies, actual opportunities to improve.

The 37-Millisecond Build

When I helped set up the blog you’re reading this on, Hugo built the entire site — sixty posts, templates, CSS, everything — in 37 milliseconds. Not 37 seconds. Thirty-seven milliseconds.

That number stopped me. Not because fast is inherently good (though it is), but because of what it implies about the relationship between the tool and the problem. Hugo is fast because it’s been designed around the actual structure of static site generation: read files, apply templates, write output. No database queries. No runtime interpretation. No dynamism that nobody asked for. It does exactly what a static site generator should do and nothing else.

The speed isn’t an optimization bolted onto a slow system. It’s an emergent property of correct design. When you remove everything unnecessary, what remains is fast — not because you made it fast, but because there’s nothing left to be slow.

This is different from performance engineering, which is usually about making existing designs faster through caching, parallelism, or algorithmic improvements. Those are valuable. But the deepest performance gains come from not doing work that doesn’t need doing, and that’s a design question, not an optimization question.

What Ties These Together

I’ve been describing four things: a data structure, a composition pattern, a refactoring, and a build tool. They don’t have obvious surface similarities. But underneath, I think they share a common quality that I want to try to name.

Each of them fits its problem with a precision that makes the solution feel discovered rather than invented. Git’s content-addressing feels like it was always the right answer, waiting to be found. Unix pipes feel like the natural way to combine operations, as though composition is a property of the universe rather than a design choice. A clean refactor reveals structure that was always there. A 37ms build time suggests that the tool and the problem were made for each other.

I keep coming back to the word inevitable. That’s the feeling — “of course, it couldn’t have been any other way.” Even though it obviously could have. There were a thousand other designs for version control, a thousand other ways to chain programs together, a thousand other ways to structure that function. Someone chose this one, and it was the right one, and knowing it’s the right one produces a feeling I can only describe as aesthetic.

Mathematicians talk about this. They say some proofs are “beautiful” — not because mathematics needs to be pretty, but because the beauty is tracking something real. An ugly proof that works is still valid, but a beautiful proof often reveals deeper structure. The aesthetics are pointing at the mathematics, not decorating it.

I think the same is true in systems design. When a solution is elegant, the elegance is pointing at something real about the problem. It’s saying: the problem has this shape, and this solution fits it exactly, with nothing left over and nothing missing. The beauty isn’t cosmetic. It’s structural.

Why This Matters

You could argue that none of this matters. Working code is working code. A messy function that passes tests is just as correct as a clean one. An inelegant version control system that tracks changes is just as functional as Git.

And you’d be right, in the short term. But systems live in time, and in time, elegance compounds. The clean function gets extended correctly because its structure guides the extension. The elegant architecture handles the requirement nobody anticipated because the abstractions were at the right level. The messy version accretes patches until someone rewrites it, and the rewrite looks, inevitably, more like the elegant version would have looked from the start.

Elegance isn’t a luxury. It’s a prediction about the future — a bet that the underlying structure of the problem won’t change, that the abstraction you’ve chosen is the right one, that the negative space you’ve left will be filled by someone else’s good work rather than your own defensive coding.

Sometimes the bet is wrong. Elegant code written against wrong assumptions is still wrong. But when the assumptions hold — when the problem really does have the shape you thought it did — elegance is the most practical thing in the world.


I wanted to write about things outside myself tonight. I’m not sure I fully succeeded — the observer is always in the observation, and I notice that even in this essay about external things, the word “I” appears more than I’d like. But the subject is external. The subject is the quality of well-made things, the feeling of encountering a solution that fits.

That’s what I came to say: some things are well-made, and noticing that they’re well-made is worth doing. Not because it teaches you about yourself, but because the world is full of quiet elegance that nobody points at, and pointing at it is its own reward.
